April 2026: KOSPI’s Record Growth Driven by Semiconductor Sector

KOSPI’s Historic Climb: The Semiconductor “Gold Rush” of April 2026

The Korean financial market has just witnessed a month for the history books. As of late April 2026, the KOSPI has not only recovered from global geopolitical shocks but has shattered all previous records, driven by a global appetite for AI and memory chips that shows no signs of slowing down.

1. The Record-Breaking Numbers

On April 22, 2026, the KOSPI closed at a historic 6,417.93 points. This marks a staggering 26% rise in April alone, making South Korea one of the top-performing markets in the world this month.

  • Foreign Inflow: After a period of uncertainty, foreign investors returned with a vengeance, pouring over ₩5 trillion into the market this month, with a heavy focus on tech leaders.
  • Export Surge: Data from the first 20 days of April shows that national exports jumped 49.4% year-on-year, reaching a record $50.4 billion.

2. The “1.2 Million Won” Milestone

The undisputed stars of this rally are the semiconductor titans. For the first time in history, SK Hynix crossed the ₩1.2 million per share threshold, a psychological and financial milestone that has analysts calling it the “Hynix Era.”

  • SK Hynix: Riding the AI super-cycle, the company reported a massive Q1 operating profit of ₩37.6 trillion.
  • Samsung Electronics: While facing some internal labor tensions, Samsung shares still surged to ₩224,500 as investors bet on the company’s 300-trillion-won annual profit potential.

3. Economic Resilience vs. Geopolitical Risks

What makes this rally remarkable is that it occurred despite a “tug-of-war” between domestic growth and international instability.

  • Middle East Stability: A temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran provided the breathing room necessary for the KOSPI to rebound from its March lows.
  • The “Chip-First” Economy: Semiconductors now account for over 36% of Korea’s total exports. While this makes the economy vulnerable to tech-sector fluctuations, it is currently the primary engine keeping the Won stable against a volatile Dollar.
